Key Concept & Maxims of Wing Chun (Part 2)

"Through the strict drilling of Chiu Ying in Chi Sau and other drills, we learn that even though the drills themselves are somewhat artificial and unrealistic per se, we become so accustomed to being square-on and applying Chiu Ying that we are able to carry that over to actual application, perhaps under more realistic conditions. What we are essentially doing is drilling the concept deep into our own neural system, such that we are comfortable with and automatically correct our posture so as to remain square-on to our opponent’s centre of mass at all times, and to regain it almost instinctively if we momentarily lose that shape."

Wing Chun, Sifu Wan Kam Leung: Striving For Perfection

"Everyone has a different opinion of what good Wing Chun is, depending on their needs or on what they learned a long time ago. They think that Wing Chun doesn’t change and tend to follow the natural way of things. If you follow history you can’t keep up with evolution—we always have to move forward—we can’t go backwards I’m afraid! That’s why I don’t understand when people talk about the “original” Wing Chun and why they want to keep it as it was so many years ago. If you learned it in the past, you have to look at what you didn’t learn so well. You need to improve it and make it more useful for modern applications. That’s why I evolved the techniques and the style I learnt myself, in order to make the system, on the whole, more complete. History is for you to study but you shouldn’t remain there, you need to move forward or you will soon become extinguished. That’s why you need to keep updating your knowledge—and that’s the same with anything in life. I don’t see why it shouldn’t be the same for Wing Chun. I can’t say other Wing Chun styles are no good, it’s just that most of them don’t focus on improvement and some don’t even focus on the good things that they have. If you focus on it, your Gung Fu will always improve as a result. Bruce Lee invented Jeet Kune Do because he was really fast, but nowadays there are many people that are faster than him. That’s why you can’t say that the Gung Fu of the older generation was better. Maybe it was just because they had a lot more time and fewer distractions. The system was also more closed, but nowadays you can compare because you can see exactly what the others do. We always have to strive for perfection so the technique can overcome sheer power. I don’t say that we have the best system in place, but I can say that many Wing Chun practitioners are very close-minded and conservative."

Baat Jaam Dao, Wing Chun Sifu Robert Chu

"Ip Man did not pass down a single set, just like the Jong. Perhaps it was his work to alter the choreography, as such, the sets he passed down to his students tend to vary greatly. I have many theories as to why there are so many different variations. It was stated that Ip Man only personally taught four people the knives, so why the plethora of sets? Over Dim Sum, Ip Man would demonstrate a few movements with chopsticks and discuss the basic outline of the form. I imagine his students furiously writing notes on their napkins, spilling tea, mis-transcribing Chinese characters, and juxtaposing the order during these rare occasions. So help a student if he had a bad stomach that day! He’d have to get the notes again from his Sihing Dai, which may not be reliable!"

Wing Chun's concept-based Footwork: Wing Chun Illustrated Magazine issue No.14

"It is my sincere belief, after having studied systems like Yong Chun Bai He (White Crane) and other ancestral systems to Wing Chun, as well as several other Fukinese systems, that this would most likely have been the original way of stepping, all the while keeping the 50/50 weight distribution as a fixed base. Some may argue that Wing Chun has been highly modified and also improved over the years and therefore the stepping is performed much differently nowadays. However, I have all the reasons to believe, by judging Wing Chun on its ancestral systems and above all from its theory and conceptual point-of-view and from putting it into practice, that this is a mistake and that the knowledge gradually became watered down due to various reasons."

Wing Chun, Dana Wing: Discovering Your Hidden Abilities

"My motivations today are just as strong and vivid as they were during the beginning, mainly because I am still discovering new things about the art and also about myself. Plus, the feeling of sharing those discoveries with others through teaching— it’s a feeling that no amount of money can buy! I often see myself (in my younger days) similar to students who come to my club and I say to myself, 'That was me x-number of years ago.' I want them to learn faster and much better than I did, and not take so long to be able to feel confident and assured in themselves. Giving back to the world is a wonderful feeling and hopefully, I can also leave a decent legacy of good students to carry on this great martial art."

Wing Chun: Steps On The Posts - Mui Fa Jong

"In Wing Chun the footwork is critical in order to gain the correct angle for attacking and subsequently counter-attacking. Practitioners who are regularly training on the Mui Fa Jong will rapidly gain a more solid understanding of footwork, equilibrium, stance and balance. It should be noted that a Mui Fa Jong cannot, in itself, teach anything to a Wing Chun practitioner—the posts are only intended to refine and guide the student’s movements, which can clearly be achieved only by moving through all the different aspects of training. Like many other training equipments, the Mui Fa Jong is just a tool to help the student further polish and correct the techniques he/she has previously learned."

Wing Chun Illustrated issue No.14: Sifu Lo Man Kam - Keeping The Art Alive

"It’s not important which lineage you learn, but it is important that you can make the Gung Fu functional. Every teacher who can pass that on to you is a good teacher. A good Sifu does not only pass on the Gung Fu knowledge, he also passes on wisdom. He must not always look for more money—he should be a holder of the knowledge and should look for a plethora of talented students who can help spread the art to the next generation. Some people say a professional Sifu has to charge a lot money for his lessons because Wing Chun is his livelihood. A university professor is also a professional who passes on his wisdom and knowledge, and he earns a generous salary for doing so. However, he will never become rich from teaching! A good student can learn from him without paying any extra money."

IP MAN: THE FINAL FIGHT Review from Issue No. 13 of Wing Chun Illustrated

IP MAN: THE FINAL FIGHT is the second “unofficial” Ip Man film from director Herman Yau and, fortunately, this time around he manages to redeem himself after the poorly received prequel film, THE LEGEND IS BORN: IP MAN (2006).

Instead of presenting Wing Chun patriarch Ip Man as a young spy-fighting superhero, we see him as a humble, unassuming older man experiencing the latter part of his life, running a school in 1950s Hong Kong. What really makes this film work well, in ways that previous interpretations didn’t manage, is the outstanding performance of veteran actor Anthony Wong (THE FOUR) in the titular role. In many ways, this is the Ip Man film that we have been waiting for all along.

Playing very much against type, Wong gives one of the finest performances of his long career, capturing the real essence of the man himself, as opposed to the romanticised legend, giving him both humility and inner calm.

Spending months preparing for the role by training in Wing Chun, Wong isn’t slack in the action sequences either and he more than holds his own against his on-screen opponents, including a short but memorable exchange with his fellow screen veteran Eric Tsang (INFERNAL AFFAIRS). He is also the only actor so far to adopt Ip Man’s real Foshan accent, thus really bringing a sense of authenticity and reality that has not previously been seen.

As in previous outings, there is a certain degree of exaggeration and embellishment in the way that events in Ip Man’s life are presented. However, even though we know that we are heading for the obligatory climactic martial showdown, in this film there is none of the over-the-top nationalism or blatant gwailo-bashing that has often prevailed before. Instead, we are taken on a journey back to Hong Kong in troubled post-war times (shot on a remarkable purpose-built set that is incredibly realistic) where we see Ip Man trying to forge a new life for himself, his beginnings as a Wing Chun teacher, and ultimately how he made his mark by being humble, unassuming and quietly forthright in his dealings with all those he encounters along the way.
