The Legendary of Wing Chun - Grandmaster Leung Jan

Chan Wah-shun (陳華順) nicknamed Money Changer Wah (找錢華), was a student of the Wing Chun grandmaster Leung Jan (梁贊).

Chan ran a coin changing stall near Leung Jan's herbal medicine clinic (贊生堂) on 筷子街 in Foshan. Chan was a very robust person; due to his profession, he had to carry very heavy loads of coins everyday around town, and built up very strong muscles over the years. Legend says that he was able to split several copper coins by the grip of his palm. He had studied martial arts from others before learning Wing Chun and was agile and strong.

He had been an admirer of his neighbor Leung Jan and politely greeted his idol every time they met on the street. He had begged to become a student of Leung Jan numerous times but consistently was turned down.

Leung Jan only had few private students at the time including his two sons, Leung Chun and Leung Bik and another student Woodman Wah. Woodman Wah got his nickname from allegedly breaking the Wooden dummy during practice. Leung Jan only taught his students behind closed door of his clinic after business hours. Chan was not discouraged by the repeated rejections. He often hid outside the clinic to peek at Leung Jan's teaching through the cracks on the doors. Unauthorized sneaky learning of martial art is a taboo in China and is considered a form of stealing. Watching from a distance didn't work out without getting the verbal instructions and explanations. So Chan figured out a different way to learn. He made friend with Woodman Wah and learned from him informally. Since Chan was very good martial art material, he picked up very quickly from Woodman Wah because he had been watching for an extended period already. The brief instructions from Woodman Wah pieced the puzzle together.

One day while Leung Jan was out enjoying tea, his two young sons were in charge of the clinic. Woodman Wah and Chan entered the clinic. Leung Chun didn't believe Chan was any good without formal training and challenged Chan to spar. Chan was good enough to make Leung Chun lose his balance and break his father's favorite chair as he fell. They put the chair back together hoping Leung Chun's father would not notice. When the chair fell apart as Leung Jan sat on it, the youngsters had to tell the truth about what happened. Leung Jan asked Woodman Wah to summon Chan. Woodman Wah thought Chan was in deep trouble, so he advised Chan to flee. When he told his master that Chan was missing, Leung Jan knew what the young men were thinking. Leung Jan explained that he just wanted to see if the Wing Chun student who he had never met was as good as his son claimed. The surprised Chan's dream came true; he finally became a formal student.

Chan was not as well educated as the Leung's children, however, he had a talent for martial art. As a result, he did Wing Chun better than his fellow students despite his late start. Because of his profession, he had many opportunities to use his Wing Chun skill to defend his business, and actually got more combat experience than his sifu. He often represented his sifu to take challenges and took victory beautifully.

The Qing government once recruited Chan to be the head coach of the army. Chan turned the offer down. Like his sifu, they both were unwilling to give up their day job. Wing Chun was just their hobby. He also picked up De Da (跌打) healing techniques from his sifu. He opened a healing clinic and closed down his coin changing business. Like his sifu, Chan didn't open a martial arts school. Within his 36 years of teaching Wing Chun as a hobby, he only had 16 students.

He admitted his last student Yip Man when he was 70 years old. He died three years after Yip Man became his student. He asked his second student Ng Chung-sok to continue Yip Man's trainning after his death in 1906 or 1909.

The Legendary of Wing Chun - Yim Wing Chun

Yim Wing-chun (simplified Chinese: 严咏春; traditional Chinese: 嚴詠春; pinyin: Yányǒngchūn) is a Chinese legendary character, often cited in Wing Chun legends as the first master of the martial art bearing her name. Wing-chun, though a person's name in Chinese language, literally means "spring chant" or "forever spring", or may be substituted with the character for "eternal springtime".

Different accounts of Yim's story exist, but the central sequence of events remains largely the same, beginning with Yim's teacher. During the Qing Dynasty, a Shaolin Buddhist nun and abbess, Ng Mui (五枚師太), reportedly fled the destruction of the Siu Lam Temple at the hands of the government; the temple was believed to be harbouring revolutionaries. According to one legend, Ng saw a crane and a snake fighting, and incorporated their movements into her style of Chinese boxing to form a new, unnamed martial art system.

Ng later took on a disciple, Yim Wing-chun, and passed the art on to her. Yim was well known for her beauty, and sold tofu for a living. A local bully tried to force her to marry him, but she used the art to defeat him. Some accounts claim that Ng taught Yim the art specifically for the purpose of defending herself against the unwanted advances.

Yim later married Leung Bok-chau, a salt merchant, and he named the art Wing Chun Kuen (Wing Chun's boxing) after her. Lee (1972) attributes significant development of the art to Yim, crediting her with the invention of the chi sao (sticking hands) exercise. From there, the art passed through several men's hands before coming to Ip Man.

The movie Wing Chun (1994) loosely portrays Yim's life within the action film genre, with Michelle Yeoh portraying the central character. A more recent movie, Kung Fu Wing Chun (2010), Yim Wing-chun was portrayed by Bai Jing and Leung Bok-chau was portrayed by Yu Shaoqun. Meng and Rudnicki (2006) have written a critical analysis of the legend surrounding Yim.

感言

A circulation of life in Wing Chun 詠春之成長與循環
There is always a master/teacher to teach you the technique and guidance of martial art, leading and protecting you like a son of himself or like a friend. Hope you to become a Good Man in this society and grow together. However, like the Great Grand Master, Ip Man to meet a mentor is not easy in his life. Leung Pik had changed Ip Man's mind upon Wing Chun techniques. Apply techniques wisely and make a different to yourself, a Wing Chun style to suit yourself.
Real/Friendly Sparring with teammates and different martial art practitioners are so much different compare to practice and talk about the philosophy of Wing Chun.

Wing Chun Chi Sao - Single Sticky Hand Pratice

Before formally begin to Wing Chun Chi Sao and Luk Sao training, single sticky hand exercise should apply. As images provide, it's a routine exercise of (A) Dap Sao against (B) Bong Sao to (A) Fok Sao against (B) Tan Sao. Practice this routine slowly to understand the incoming force, direction and speed of opponent. Besides, elbow points have to keep close to self center line, soften arm muscle and whole body and get wrist sensitivity higher to reflex whatever opponent does.

Wing Chun Stance Training

Wing Chun Basic Chi Sao & Huen Sao Practice by Sifu Jiason Foong (Wing C...

Tan Sao Technique

There are two ways for Wing Chun Tan Sao Technique, one is inner and the other is out of triangle. As image here is the Inner Tan Sao Application to divert incoming force of opponent. For instance, Inner Tan Sao (Left Arm) against opponent's right arm, Wing Chun Tan Sao Technique principle is keep arm close to your body, hand open and fingers point to opponent, Elbow Point stays close to center line, and possible to maintain it stick to your rib as normally body structure does, Or Elbow Point may extend like a fist distance, intercept whereby wrist line in between two inches to divert opponent incoming force away of self center line to keep yourself safe.

Wing Chun Tutorial

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Qigong in the Wing Chun Community

Wing Chun and the Fading of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1950-1990.

World War Two and the subsequent Japanese occupation did little to promote the fortunes o
f Wing Chun. The art did recover somewhat between 1945 and 1949. Unfortunately, this brief flowering was crushed by the ultimate Communist victory in China’s long running civil war. The Communists had a lot of reasons to dislike Wing Chun. This was a violent reactionary art closely tied to the reactionary land owners and rich merchants of Guangdong, their sworn enemies. Further, a number of individuals in the Wing Chun community (including Ip Man) had served as police officers and detectives at the same time that the GMD was using law enforcement to investigate, interrogate, and even execute suspected Communists. Not all Wing Chun teachers fled in 1949 (for instance Lai Hip Chi and Sum Num stayed), but Wing Chun was effectively crippled on the mainland. It would not begin the process of recovery and rebuilding until the 1980s and 1990s.

The situation was different in other places like Hong Kong and Vietnam. Ip Man managed to start a vibrant Wing Chun community after he fled into exile in 1949. It is often said that he was the first individual to publically teach Wing Chun. This commonly repeated assertion is mostly nonsense. Many individuals had taught very publically before him, but the events of 1949 erased or helped to obscure their legacy. Nor did they ever achieve the fantastic levels of recognition that Ip Man earned. From Hong Kong he was in an ideal position to send students abroad at a time when the Chinese martial arts were just starting to trend in the global market. While Ip Man was not Wing Chun’s first public teacher, he was certainly its most successful. But what did he teach his students about medicine?

For the most part he seems to have ignored the subject. The image of Wing Chun that emerged in the 1950s was that of angry young men fighting on rooftops and settling scores in secret challenges matches. A less charitable reading of this period might instead characterize it as one in Wing Chun was closely linked to street violence and youth delinquency. That is certainly how the Hong Kong police perceived the situation.

The sorts of students that came to Ip Man in the 1950s were, by in large, not very interested in traditional medicine. Young people rarely are. Further, Hong Kong had a relative abundance of high quality modern western medical care. Certainly some students like Moy Yat and Ip Man’s children (to name just two examples, there were also others) expressed an interest in TCM and learned the old man’s art. Most, however, did not.

It is remarkable how important health practices were to practitioners in the 1930s and how much they faded in the 1950s and 1960s. Wing Chun was quickly and efficiently rebranded as a street fighting and self-defense art divorced from the world of traditional Chinese philosophy and cosmology. It is often said that in Hong Kong Ip Man simplified the teaching system, removing the “five elements” and the “eight directions” as these were no longer helpful metaphors when coaching his modern, urbane, western educated students. Yet without these metaphors it is impossible to master the complex world of Qi cultivation and traditional herbalism.

Nevertheless, there is one interesting development in this period. Ip Man’s students and children report seeing him perform Siu Lim Tao very slowly (emphasizing the ‘Three Prayers to Buddha’ chapter) as a form of breathing exercise dedicated to building and (and presumably moving) his Qi. This may have happened in his lineage in Foshan as well, but I have yet to find any direct reference to it. It is suggestive to note that breathing exercises are observed in the Ip Man clan for the first time at about the same period that they are being promoted as a form of healthcare for the masses on the mainland.
